Our Story

Discover the heart of Can-I-Play, Geelong's community sports program for men 35+. Learn about our journey, our mission, and the core values that drive us. We're building a healthier, more connected Geelong, one game at a time.

The 'Can I Play?' Moment

Can-I-Play started with a simple, unforgettable moment. While out for a run, I watched a casual lunchtime soccer game. I jumped in, took a shot (a rainbow kick, no less!), and then asked, "Can I play?"

That moment, twenty-two years ago, sparked an idea: casual, welcoming games should be easily accessible. Can-I-Play is now a platform for Geelong men 35+ to easily find, organise, and participate in casual sports. No commitments, no clubs, just easy game postings and friendly play.

Our focus:

  • Accessibility: Quick posts and easy join-in
  • Community: Connecting neighbours and friends
  • Consistency: Flexible, friendly meetups
  • Well-being: Sport that’s joyful and sustainable

Thanks to Geelong’s vibrant spirit and everyone involved. If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love to play, but I don’t know who’s around,” this is for you. Welcome to Can-I-Play—where "Can I play?" is an everyday invitation.

Our Mission and Impact

Our mission is to create meaningful, healthful connections through sport for men 35 and older in Geelong. We’re not about competition; we’re about providing a welcoming, low-pressure space to move, reconnect, and enjoy the benefits of sport.

What we aim to achieve:

  • Healthy bodies and hearts: Regular activity and easier access to informal games.
  • Real, supportive connections: Friendly, inclusive play that builds friendships and reduces isolation.
  • Open conversations: A safe outlet to connect, talk, and find camaraderie.
  • Sustainable wellbeing: Routines that are easy to maintain and adaptable.

The impact we want to make:

  • Individuals feel seen, supported, and energised.
  • Communities are strengthened through regular gatherings.
  • A ripple effect of healthier habits and open conversations about wellbeing.

Our Core Beliefs

At Can-I-Play, our core beliefs guide everything we do:

  • Accessibility and ease: Sport should be welcoming and easy to join.
  • Community and belonging: Casual, friendly play that helps men connect and build friendships.
  • Wellbeing over wins: Sport as a vehicle for physical health, mental clarity, and emotional resilience.
  • Open dialogue and vulnerability: A safe space where men can talk and seek support.
  • Respect, dignity, and inclusivity: Every game is conducted with respect for all.
  • Balance and sustainability: Activities that fit life commitments.
  • Local spirit, shared responsibility: A Geelong-grown initiative powered by volunteers.
  • Safety and moderation: Guidelines to keep activities positive and inclusive.

"Can-I-Play has given me a new lease on life! I've rediscovered my love for sport, made some great mates, and feel healthier than I have in years."
